When you're preparing to ship a live animal, it's helpful to know about:
1. Weather delays at FedEx hubs. This tells you whether you should delay shipping until the weather improves.
2. High and low temperatures along the route. While you should base your heat and cold pack use on the temperatures at the origin and destination, it's smart to factor in the temps at the FedEx hub.
When you book a shipment, FedEx does its calculations and determines your package's route on the fly. The hub info is embedded in the routing code on your shipping label.
The first character in the routing code indicates which hub the package will be routed through.
"X" is the main hub in Memphis, TN
"N" is Indianapolis, IN
"A" is Ft. Worth, TX
"W" is Oakland, CA
"Q" is one of the Los Angeles area hubs
"E" is Newark, NJ
"G" is Atlanta, GA
A number indicates the package will stay within the state of origin
When you have your label in hand, check the weather forecast for the FedEx hub. Depending on what you find, you might decide to ship as planned, use a heat or cold pack, or wait a few days.
